Only in the last 10–15 years has it become possible to turn it into a stable, safe-to-handle **crystalline form** with an unmistakable silvery-blue shimmer. Every crystalline piece carries a microscopic surface that cannot be reproduced — like a fingerprint. That makes osmium **forgery-proof** and uniquely traceable via the Osmium Identification Code (OIC). [See the current osmium price →](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-price/) - **Extremely rare.** Only a tiny amount of recoverable osmium exists on the entire planet. - **Highest density.** No element is denser — a small piece weighs surprisingly much. - **Forgery-proof.** Unique crystal surface, scannable and certified via OIC. - **Tangible asset.** Scarcity-based and independent of classic stock exchanges. ## Four reasons people look at osmium ### Unrivalled rarity Rarer than gold, platinum or rhodium. Scarcity is the strongest value driver of any tangible asset. ### Densest of all metals 22.59 g/cm³ — no element is denser. This is exactly what the famous [osmium cube](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-cube/) shows off. ### Forgery-proof The crystal structure is a physical fingerprint — scannable via OIC and stored in the World Database. ### Price development Since the first issue in 2017 the osmium price has risen strongly — scarcity-driven. ## Osmium vs. gold — the key differences | Criterion | Osmium | Gold | | --- | --- | --- | | Rarity | Rarest stable element | Rare | | Forgery protection | Crystal fingerprint (OIC) | Hallmarks / testing | | Density | 22.59 g/cm³ — highest | 19.3 g/cm³ | | Look | blue-silver crystal | classic gold | ## Rare. All figures at room temperature. | Rank | Metal | Density | Weight of a 1 cm³ cube | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 1 | Osmium | 22.59 g/cm³ | ≈ 22.6 g | | 2 | Iridium | 22.56 g/cm³ | ≈ 22.6 g | | 3 | Platinum | 21.45 g/cm³ | ≈ 21.5 g | | 4 | Rhenium | 21.02 g/cm³ | ≈ 21.0 g | | 5 | Neptunium | 20.45 g/cm³ | ≈ 20.5 g | | 6 | Plutonium | 19.82 g/cm³ | ≈ 19.8 g | | 7 | Gold | 19.32 g/cm³ | ≈ 19.3 g | | 8 | Tungsten | 19.25 g/cm³ | ≈ 19.3 g | | 9 | Uranium | 18.95 g/cm³ | ≈ 19.0 g | | 10 | Tantalum | 16.65 g/cm³ | ≈ 16.7 g | | 11 | Mercury | 13.53 g/cm³ | ≈ 13.5 g | | 12 | Rhodium | 12.41 g/cm³ | ≈ 12.4 g | | 13 | Lead | 11.34 g/cm³ | ≈ 11.3 g | | 14 | Silver | 10.49 g/cm³ | ≈ 10.5 g | | 15 | Copper | 8.96 g/cm³ | ≈ 9.0 g | | 16 | Iron | 7.87 g/cm³ | ≈ 7.9 g | | 17 | Aluminium | 2.70 g/cm³ | ≈ 2.7 g | Lead is the everyday byword for heavy, yet it only ranks 13th. Tungsten, often called the heaviest common metal, sits just below gold. A cube of osmium weighs almost **twice as much as lead** and roughly **eight times as much as aluminium** at the same size. ## Heavy or dense – what is the difference? Strictly speaking, the correct word is **dense**. Weight depends on quantity: a kilogram of aluminium weighs exactly as much as a kilogram of osmium. **Density**, on the other hand, describes how much mass is packed into a given volume, expressed in grams per cubic centimetre. Anyone searching for the “heaviest metal” almost always means exactly that: the metal that weighs the most at the same size. And that is osmium. The difference only shows when you put two pieces side by side: an aluminium cube the size of a sugar lump weighs just under three grams, the same cube made of osmium almost 23. Calling osmium the densest *element* is equally correct, because no other element in the periodic table reaches its value. More on its properties under [What is osmium](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/what-is-osmium/). ## Osmium or iridium – which is really ahead? Between osmium at 22.59 g/cm³ and iridium at 22.56 g/cm³ lie three hundredths. That is so little that for decades the two metals took turns as the densest element, depending on the measurement method and the sample used. X-ray diffraction settled the question: from the crystal structure and the atomic mass, the density can be calculated without impurities or trapped air distorting the result. By that method osmium comes out ahead, if only just. In practice both metals are about equally heavy, and when you have to point at a single element, you point at osmium. The reason for the top spot lies in the atom itself. Osmium combines a high atomic mass with a comparatively small atomic radius, an effect of the relativistic contraction of its inner electron shells. Its atoms are therefore packed exceptionally tightly. ## Not just the densest metal ### Densest element 22.59 g/cm³ – no other element in the periodic table reaches this value. ### Rarest stable metal Osmium occurs only as a companion of platinum and is recovered in tiny quantities during platinum mining. ### Hardest of the platinum group Osmium is the hardest of the six platinum metals and at the same time very brittle. ### Forgery-proof The crystalline form carries a unique surface structure that cannot be reproduced. ## The rarest metal on Earth Osmium is not only the densest but also the **rarest stable element** on Earth. It never occurs on its own, only as a companion of platinum. During platinum mining it is recovered in very small quantities as a by-product, and only a fraction of that can be converted into the crystalline form. This combination of highest density and extreme rarity explains why osmium has been regarded as a tangible asset since the crystalline form was first issued in 2017. The current price is **€2,301 per gram** (as of 11 September 2026), about **€71,568 per troy ounce** or **€2,300,980 per kilogram**. How that price has developed is shown on the [osmium price](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-price/) page with a daily updated chart. If you want to feel the density for yourself, the [osmium cube](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-cube/) is the usual choice: it makes the difference to gold or lead immediately tangible. ## Heaviest metal – frequently asked questions **What is the heaviest metal in the world?** Osmium, with a density of 22.59 g/cm³ (0.816 lb/in³). Iridium follows closely at 22.56 g/cm³, then platinum at 21.45 g/cm³. **What is the densest metal?** Osmium is the densest metal and the densest naturally occurring element, at 22.59 grams per cubic centimetre. **Is osmium heavier than gold?** Yes, clearly. Gold is 19.32 g/cm³. A piece of osmium weighs about 17 percent more than a piece of gold of the same size. **Is osmium heavier than tungsten?** Yes. Tungsten is 19.25 g/cm³, slightly below gold. Osmium, iridium, platinum, rhenium and gold are all denser than tungsten. **What is the difference between heavy and dense?** Strictly speaking the correct term is dense: density is mass per volume. Colloquially, “the heaviest metal” means the same thing, the metal that weighs the most at the same size. **What is the rarest metal on Earth?** Osmium is considered the rarest stable element. It occurs only as a companion of platinum and is recovered in very small quantities as a by-product. **How much does a cubic centimetre of osmium weigh?** About 22.6 grams. A 10 cm cube, one litre, would weigh roughly 22.6 kilograms, just under 50 pounds. Densities according to standard reference values at room temperature. Source page: https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-bar/ Language: EN Last content change: 2026-09-11 Also in DE: https://www.osmium-group.com/osmium-barren/index.md Publisher: Osmium Group, independent information portal, not operated by the Osmium-Institut The osmium bar, also called an osmium ingot, is the classic way of holding crystalline osmium as a tangible asset. Every bar is a rectangular flat bar grown in the crystallisation process, with its own weight, its own dimensions and its own crystal surface. This page explains what a bar weighs, what determines its price and how it compares with discs, coin disks and squares. Since 2017 it has been traded in crystalline form, and the flat bar is one of the shapes in which that crystalline osmium is sold. In the shop of the Osmium Institute the bar is listed among the single pieces of crystalline osmium, alongside discs, coin disks and squares, and is filed under tangible assets. A flat bar is a rectangular osmium bar crystallised out of the plane. The process produces bars of different weight and different surface area, and because no two identical pieces can be grown, each bar is unique. The layer thickness deviates slightly from bar to bar, and the crystallisation time determines both thickness and sparkle. A bar is therefore not a standard-weight product: you choose a specific piece with its individual weight and price, or you state the amount you want to spend. Physically the bar shows what sets osmium apart. One cubic centimetre weighs around 22.6 g, against 19.30 g for gold, 21.4 g for platinum and 11.34 g for lead, so even a bar of a few grams feels unexpectedly heavy for its size. The crystalline form is hard, corrosion-resistant, chemically inert and does not tarnish. ## Four things that define an osmium bar ### Unique crystal surface The crystal structure of osmium cannot be reproduced. Every bar is a one-off with its own physical fingerprint. ### OIC certificate Every genuine bar carries an **Osmium Identification Code** and is recorded in the Osmium World Database, the proof of authenticity and ownership. ### No cutting surcharge Bars are tangible-asset products: priced per gram, free of cutting surcharges and without small-quantity surcharges. ### Exchangeable Bars can be exchanged at the Osmium Institutes into other denominations free of charge, provided the desired pieces are in stock. ## Bar, disc, coin disk or square? The shop of the Osmium Institute groups its single pieces into four categories. Every piece is listed with its own weight and its own dimensions, so the table describes forms and roles rather than fixed sizes; what is on offer changes with the available stock. | Form | Description | Role | | --- | --- | --- | | Bar (flat bar) | rectangular flat piece crystallised out of the plane, considerably smaller than a gold bar | classic tangible-asset form, priced per gram without cutting surcharge | | Disc | round flat piece with a short outer edge and a large inner area | most economical geometric form, exchange target for several bars | | Coin disk | round, coin-sized | small tangible-asset piece with its own OIC | | Coin disk, hexagonal | hexagonal, coin-sized | hexagonal alternative to the round coin disk | | Square | square, flat, the smallest of the four categories | entry piece for small amounts | Flat bars are small, flat pieces, considerably smaller than the gold bars most people picture, and no two of them share the same weight or the same dimensions. The shop states both for every bar individually, so you always choose a specific piece rather than a standard unit. Stars and diamonds, the smallest denominations, are sold as collector’s pieces with a cutting surcharge and belong to a different shop category. ## Sparkle, size and layer thickness of an osmium bar Each bar is rated for the coarseness of its crystal surface, which the shop calls sparkle. The coarser the crystal structure, the stronger the sparkle; a finer structure gives a softer, more varied sparkle. How coarse the surface turns out depends on the crystallisation, so the sparkle rating is part of what makes each bar unique. For each bar the shop also states a calculated mean layer thickness, with the note that the actual object is noticeably thicker. The actual thickness of a bar is not stated in the shop. The shop recommends bars with a larger surface area. Flat pieces are cut by wire erosion into two-dimensional shapes, and a larger area leaves more geometric freedom if a shape is ever to be cut from the bar later on. ## What does an osmium bar cost? The price of an osmium bar follows one rule: the osmium weight of the bar multiplied by the current price per gram. Bars are tangible-asset products, so no cutting surcharge is added, and the shop prices per gram without small-quantity surcharges. The current price is **€2,301 per gram** net (as of 11 September 2026), which corresponds to about €71,568 per troy ounce or €2,300,980 per kilogram. Osmium bars are small pieces; the kilogram price is a calculation figure and a comparison value against other metals, not a listed single piece. For private buyers in Germany, VAT at 19 per cent is added to the net price. The price is not set on a commodities exchange. It is fixed via the Osmium Institutes, which bring osmium into circulation in 40 countries, and the osmium world association OWC publishes the daily price on osmium-preis.com. When crystalline osmium was first quoted in 2017 the price was **€528 per gram**; how it has developed since is shown on the [osmium price](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-price/) page with a chart of the development since 2017. Past price development is no indication of future prices. Certified osmium bars, priced per gram, each with its own OIC. [Choose an osmium bar →](https://www.osmium-group.com/go/) (Ad) ## Osmium ingot, osmium bullion and osmium coin: what the terms mean An osmium ingot is the common synonym for the osmium bar described on this page: the same rectangular flat bar of crystalline osmium under a different name. Searches for osmium bullion usually mean exactly this group of products: pieces bought for their metal weight, priced per gram and free of cutting surcharges. The shop calls them tangible-asset products and distinguishes them from collector’s pieces, the cut shapes such as diamonds, stars, triangles and hexagons made for processors. Those carry a surcharge for cutting and offcut, because they cannot be cut without waste, and the shop describes them as unsuitable for a classic tangible investment. The shop does not list a minted osmium coin. What it lists as a coin disk is a round or hexagonal piece of crystalline osmium about the size of a coin, each with its own weight. Like the bar, its surface comes from the crystallisation process, and like the bar it carries its own OIC. Bars, discs and coin disks can be exchanged into one another. Several flat bars can be swapped gram for gram into a disc at the Osmium Institutes free of charge; the disc is considered the most economical geometric form because of its short outer edge and large inner area. Pieces you already own can be sent to the German Osmium Institute, checked for authenticity and exchanged into the denomination you want, small pieces into large ones and vice versa, provided the desired pieces are in stock. ## Storing and reselling an osmium bar A bar concentrates high value in very little space, which makes it simple and unobtrusive to store. The recommendation on this site is to keep the osmium and its certificate in a safe or a bank deposit box. Crystalline osmium can be held physically, and storage with a custodian is optional. The OIC is what makes a bar tradeable later. The microscopic crystal surface of every piece is scanned and stored under its code in the **Osmium World Database**, and after purchase the code is linked to you as the owner. Since 2021 the Osmium Marketplace has allowed certified osmium with an OIC to be resold between private individuals and dealers. How a purchase works step by step, from choosing the form to registering the OIC, is described in the guide on how to [buy osmium](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/buy-osmium/). If the density effect matters more to you than value per piece, the [osmium cube](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-cube/) page compares the shapes from that angle. ## Osmium bar: frequently asked questions **What is an osmium bar?** A rectangular flat bar of crystalline osmium, crystallised out of the plane. Each bar has its own weight, its own dimensions and its own crystal surface, carries an Osmium Identification Code (OIC) and is recorded in the Osmium World Database. **How much does an osmium bar weigh?** There is no standard weight. Every flat bar is grown individually in the crystallisation process and has its own weight, which the shop states for each piece. Bars are small, flat pieces, considerably smaller and lighter than gold bars; their value is the osmium weight multiplied by the price per gram. **How much does an osmium bar cost?** The osmium weight of the bar multiplied by the current price per gram, currently €2,301 net (as of 11 September 2026). Bars carry no cutting surcharge; private buyers in Germany pay VAT on top of the net price. **Is there an osmium coin?** The shop does not list a minted coin. It lists coin disks: round or hexagonal pieces of crystalline osmium about the size of a coin, each with its own weight and its own OIC. **Can I exchange a bar for a disc or another denomination?** Yes, provided the desired pieces are in stock. Tangible-asset products can be exchanged at the Osmium Institutes into other denominations free of charge, small pieces into large ones and vice versa; several flat bars can be swapped gram for gram into a disc. The pieces are checked for authenticity first. **How do I know an osmium bar is genuine?** Every genuine bar has an OIC. Its microscopic crystal surface is scanned and stored under that code in the Osmium World Database, where the code is linked to the buyer as the owner after purchase. **Where should I store an osmium bar?** In a safe or a bank deposit box, together with the certificate. Crystalline osmium can be held physically; storage with a custodian is optional. Same size, very different weight — that’s the whole point of the osmium cube. Weight of a **1 cm³ cube** by metal: | Metal | Density | Weight of a 1 cm³ cube | | --- | --- | --- | | Osmium | 22.59 g/cm³ | ≈ 22.6 g | | Gold | 19.30 g/cm³ | ≈ 19.3 g | | Lead | 11.34 g/cm³ | ≈ 11.3 g | | Iron | 7.87 g/cm³ | ≈ 7.9 g | Scaled up, a **10 cm osmium cube (one litre)** would weigh about **22.6 kg** — heavier than the same cube in gold, lead or iron. How osmium compares with 16 other metals is shown in the [ranking of the densest metals](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/heaviest-metal/). ## What makes the osmium cube special ### Densest metal No element is denser than osmium — the cube turns that fact into something you can literally feel. ### Crystalline & rare Each cube is cut from crystalline osmium with a unique blue-silver shimmer — the rarest stable element. ### OIC-certified Every genuine cube carries an Osmium Identification Code — scannable and forgery-proof. ### Collector’s favourite The cube is a favourite display piece — high value in the smallest of spaces. Besides the cube, osmium also comes as a **bar** (standardised and easy to store), a round **disc** and the smallest denominations — **stars and diamonds**. The cube stands out purely for the density effect; for value-per-piece a bar or disc is the classic. Whatever the form: buy only **crystalline osmium with an OIC certificate**. Because osmium is the rarest stable element on Earth and can only be prepared in small crystalline quantities, the cube packs high value into the smallest of spaces. What matters is the **crystalline, OIC-certified** form: only it is forgery-proof via the Osmium Identification Code and verifiable in the Osmium World Database. Anyone viewing the cube as an [investment](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-investment/) therefore looks first for a valid certificate – form and size are then a matter of taste. ## Osmium cube — frequently asked **How much does an osmium cube weigh?** At 22.59 g/cm³, a 1 cm³ cube weighs about 22.6 g; a 10 cm cube (one litre) about 22.6 kg. **Why is osmium so heavy?** Osmium is the densest metal on Earth — denser than gold, lead or iron — so a small cube feels surprisingly heavy. **Where can I buy an osmium cube?** Buy only crystalline cubes with a valid OIC certificate from a verified dealer. See the [buying guide](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/buy-osmium/). **Is an osmium cube a good investment?** As a crystalline tangible asset, the cube combines extreme rarity with OIC forgery protection; its value follows the [osmium price per gram](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-price/). More on the [osmium as an investment](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-investment/) page. **Is an osmium cube toxic or dangerous?** No. Crystalline, solid osmium is stable and safe to handle. Only osmium tetroxide, which can form from fine osmium powder, is toxic – not the crystalline cube. **How do I recognise a genuine osmium cube?** By its Osmium Identification Code (OIC): it lets you verify authenticity and origin in the Osmium World Database. The unique crystal surface acts as a physical fingerprint. ## Related topics ### [Osmium Bar](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-bar/) What a crystalline flat bar is, how its value follows from weight and gram price and what to look for when buying. It reaches purity grades of **4N to 7N** – that is **99.99% to 99.99999%**. At this purity, interfering accompanying elements can be removed far enough that the material is prepared for demanding technical applications. HTRO is both the form from which crystalline [osmium](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/what-is-osmium/) is grown through crystallization, and the material earmarked for possible future high-tech uses. Visually it shows a **grey shimmer** and is filled in fine-granular form. ## What osmium is being researched for in high-tech ### Quantum computing Thanks to its special electronic properties (including spin-orbit coupling), osmium is seen as a research candidate for second-generation quantum computing. ### Medical technology High density, hardness and corrosion resistance make osmium interesting for medical-technology research. ### Superconductivity Osmium is also being studied in the context of high-temperature superconductivity. ### Semiconductors & chips In public discussion, osmium is named as a possible material for future semiconductors and chips. ## Crystalline osmium vs. HTRO | Feature | Crystalline osmium | HighTech-Ready Osmium | | --- | --- | --- | | Form | crystalline, blue-silver | fine grey powder, granular | | Purity | high-purity, crystallized | 4N–7N (99.99–99.99999%) | | Use | jewelry & investment | industry / research | | Price | full osmium price | ≈ half | | How to get it | buy | buy *or* 1:2 exchange | | Storage | optional vault storage | collective custody (mandatory under 500 g) | ## Buying or exchanging HTRO There are two ways to obtain HTRO – an exchange is **not** mandatory: - **Buy directly:** HTRO is a standalone product at roughly **half the price of crystalline osmium** – the crystallization costs do not apply. - **Or exchange:** crystalline osmium can be exchanged free of charge at a **1:2** ratio into HTRO – and **converted back into crystalline osmium** (the jewelry and investment form) free of charge at any time. Note: HTRO is **held in mandatory collective custody** in the high-security vault (compulsory for quantities under 500 g) – unlike crystalline osmium, which you can also hold physically. Since 2017 it has been available in a crystalline form, and that is the material a goldsmith sets into a ring. ### Crystalline surface The crystal structure forms differently on every piece and cannot be reproduced. Each osmium element is a physical fingerprint with a blue-silver sparkle. ### OIC on the element The osmium worked into the ring carries an Osmium Identification Code and is recorded in the Osmium World Database. ### Stable to wear Crystalline osmium is hard, corrosion-resistant and does not tarnish. In solid form it is chemically inert and non-allergenic. ### Densest element 22.59 g/cm³: no element packs more mass into the same volume. Gold reaches 19.30 g/cm³, platinum 21.4 g/cm³. ## How an osmium ring is made Osmium is hard and demanding to work, so osmium jewelry is made in specialised **goldsmith handwork**. The decisive step is the setting: the osmium element is placed in the band without damaging its crystal surface, because that surface carries the OIC and has to remain readable. The material itself is brought into circulation by the Osmium Institutes. Their online shop, the partner shop linked on this page, lists crystalline osmium in standard shapes for processors, for example diamonds, stars, triangles and hexagons. Finished rings are the work of goldsmiths; the shop has no ring category of its own. ## Osmium ring designs: from a single dot to a full band How much osmium a ring carries depends on the design. The table sorts the rings shown on this site by the way the osmium is set, from the smallest element to the largest surface. | Design | How the osmium is set | Seen on | | --- | --- | --- | | Set dot | One small round element, flush with the band | Wedding rings, ring with osmium setting | | Inlay | A small square element let into a polished band | Slim band ring | | Prong setting | A round osmium stone held by prongs, the look of a solitaire | Ring with blue osmium, solitaire ring | | Geometric inlays | Three triangular pieces set into a faceted front | Geometric ring | | Eternity setting | Round osmium discs in bezels all the way round the band | Eternity rings | | Cabochon | One oval osmium element on the head of the ring | Moon ring, signet ring | | Druzy face | A cushion-shaped area of crystalline osmium in a bezel | Druzy ring | | Osmium face | A rectangular surface of crystalline osmium in a metal frame, here with a keyhole cut-out | Keyhole ring | | Full band | The whole outer surface covered in crystalline osmium | Blue band ring | The order is a visual comparison of the designs shown, not a weight table. Osmium weights per ring are not published on this site; they belong to the individual piece. ## Osmium ring price: how it is calculated There is no list price for an osmium ring. The price follows a simple logic: the weight of the osmium element multiplied by the current osmium price per gram, plus the setting and the goldsmith handwork. | Component | What it depends on | Who sets the figure | | --- | --- | --- | | Osmium element | Weight in grams multiplied by the osmium price per gram, currently €2,301 net (as of 11 September 2026) | Osmium Institutes; the daily price is published on osmium-preis.com | | Setting | Metal of the band and the type of setting, from a flush dot to a full bezel | Goldsmith | | Handwork | The work of setting the element without damaging its crystal surface | Goldsmith | Osmium prices are quoted net per gram; for private buyers in Germany VAT is added. Osmium is not traded on classic exchanges. The first quotation in 2017 stood at €528 per gram and the price has risen since then; past development says nothing about future prices. The full history is on the [osmium price](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-price/) page. ## Osmium wedding rings A wedding ring with osmium keeps the band classic and adds one accent. The pair shown here consists of two gold-coloured bands, each with a small round osmium dot set flush with the surface. Because no two crystal surfaces are alike, the two dots differ under the microscope even though the rings match. Eternity rings take the idea further and carry round osmium discs in bezels all the way round. The solitaire ring holds one round element in four prongs, the familiar shape of an engagement ring. In every case the element keeps its OIC, so each ring of a pair can be verified on its own. Whether a goldsmith can make a specific pair, and at what price, is a matter for the goldsmith. The online shop of the Osmium Institutes, our partner shop, lists the crystalline osmium itself, not finished wedding rings. ## OIC: how you recognise a genuine osmium ring Every genuine piece of crystalline osmium carries an **Osmium Identification Code**. Its microscopic crystal surface is scanned and the high-resolution image is stored under the OIC in the Osmium World Database. Because the crystal structure cannot be reproduced, the scan works like a fingerprint: the element in your ring can be checked against the record in the database. This applies to jewelry as well. The osmium element in a ring carries its OIC, and authenticity and origin can be checked in the database. After a purchase the OIC is linked to the buyer as owner, so the record also serves as proof of ownership. How that check works step by step is described in the [buying guide](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/buy-osmium/). ## Wearing and caring for an osmium ring Crystalline osmium is hard and **corrosion-resistant**; unlike silver it does not tarnish. In its solid crystalline form the metal is chemically inert, non-toxic and non-allergenic, which makes it safe to wear on the skin. The toxicity often mentioned with osmium concerns osmium tetroxide, a compound that can form from fine osmium powder, not the solid crystalline element set into a ring. Treat the ring like any fine piece of jewelry and keep in mind that the crystal surface carries the OIC. Osmium is the densest element at 22.59 g/cm³; one cubic centimetre weighs about 22.6 grams. In many of the designs shown here the osmium is a small element; how much a particular ring weighs depends on the individual piece. The density becomes tangible in a solid piece such as a disc. Looking for crystalline osmium with an OIC? The online shop of the Osmium Institutes, our partner shop, lists certified pieces with their individual weight. [Certified osmium from the partner shop →](https://www.osmium-group.com/go/) (Ad) ## Osmium ring and osmium jewelry: frequently asked questions **What is an osmium ring?** A ring with an element of crystalline osmium set into the band by a goldsmith. Osmium is the densest element at 22.59 g/cm³ and the rarest stable metal on Earth; it has been traded in crystalline form since 2017. The element carries an OIC and is recorded in the Osmium World Database. **How much does an osmium ring cost?** There is no fixed osmium ring price. It is made up of the weight of the osmium element multiplied by the current [osmium price per gram](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-price/), currently €2,301 net (as of 11 September 2026), plus the setting and the goldsmith handwork. A small flush-set dot uses far less osmium than a band covered all round. **Are there osmium wedding rings?** Yes. The wedding rings shown on this page keep a classic band and add one small round osmium dot, set flush with the surface. Eternity rings carry several round osmium discs in bezels all the way round. Availability and price are a matter for the goldsmith; the partner shop lists crystalline osmium, not finished rings. **Does an osmium ring tarnish?** No. Crystalline osmium is hard and corrosion-resistant and, unlike silver, does not tarnish. Treat the ring like fine jewelry, because the crystal surface carries the OIC. **Is an osmium ring safe to wear?** Crystalline, solid osmium is stable and safe on the body: chemically inert, non-toxic and non-allergenic. Only osmium tetroxide, which can form from fine osmium powder, is toxic, and that is not what is set into a ring. **How do I know the osmium in a ring is genuine?** Every genuine osmium element carries an OIC. Its microscopic crystal surface is scanned and stored under this code in the Osmium World Database, where authenticity and origin can be checked. After purchase the OIC is linked to the buyer as owner. The [buying guide](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/buy-osmium/) explains the steps. **What other osmium jewelry is there besides rings?** Necklaces, pendants, earrings, letter charms and watches with an osmium element. Like the rings, they are made in goldsmith handwork and the osmium carries an OIC. An overview is on the [osmium jewelry](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-jewelry/) page. A small piece weighs surprisingly much. **Bluish-silver shimmer:** in crystalline form osmium shows a characteristic blue-silver shine that sets it apart from every other precious metal. **Safe in crystalline form:** while fine osmium powder can form toxic osmium tetroxide when oxidising, the **crystalline investment osmium is stable and safe** to handle — and that is the form being traded. **Extremely hard & durable:** osmium is very hard and corrosion-resistant — properties once used for alloys such as fountain-pen tips. ## Rare, safe, value-stable ### Rarest stable metal Osmium occurs only in tiny amounts as a companion of platinum — rarer than gold or platinum. ### Densest element 22.59 g/cm³ — no other element on Earth is denser. High value in the smallest of spaces. [Ranking of the densest metals →](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/heaviest-metal/) ### Forgery-proof The unique crystal surface acts as a physical fingerprint (OIC). ### Sought-after store of value Tradable in crystalline form since 2017 — with a marked price development. ## What is osmium used for? Historically osmium was used mainly in hard alloys — for pen nibs, bearings and instrument needles. Today a different role dominates: **osmium as a precious metal and store of value**, as well as exclusive [osmium jewelry](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-jewelry/). Thanks to its crystalline, certified form, osmium has become forgery-proof — the basis for it being traded today as an [investment](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/osmium-investment/) at a set price. In an especially high-purity, fine-granular powder form – as **HighTech-Ready Osmium (HTRO)** with purity grades from 99.99% to 99.99999% (4N–7N) – the metal is being researched for possible future applications: second-generation **quantum computing**, **medical technology**, **high-temperature superconductivity** and semiconductor technology. Crystalline osmium itself is used primarily as an investment and for jewelry; for industrial use it first has to be converted into the high-purity HTRO powder form. It belongs to the platinum metals and is traded in crystalline, forgery-proof form. **How dense is osmium?** 22.59 g/cm³ — making osmium the densest of all known elements, denser than gold, platinum or lead. **Is osmium toxic?** Crystalline, metallic osmium is stable and safe. Toxic is mainly osmium tetroxide, which can form from fine powder — not the crystalline investment form. **Why is osmium so rare?** It occurs only in tiny amounts as a companion of platinum; extraction and crystalline processing are extremely complex. ## Related topics ### [The Heaviest Metal in the World](https://www.osmium-group.com/en/heaviest-metal/) The ranking of the densest metals, the narrow lead over iridium and why “heavy” and “dense” are not the same thing.
